If amazon is not shipping my product and not handeling customer service, why do I need a UPC permanently attached

Why do I need to permanently attach a UPC code to my product?

Amazon is not doing anything for me other than providing a selling web site. They are not handling my customer service, they are not shipping the item, I am not shipping the item to amazon for FBA, so why do I need a label, logo or UPC code permanently attached to anything? it makes no sense to me. Who is this code for?

Amazon will never see this product and never have their hands on it.

You are correct. But most people do not think about this because they elect FBA.

Being that you are planning on being FBM only, you can elect to not put a UPC code on your items by applying for something known as a GTIN exemption. This will allow you to create new listings without the need for a barcode.

To successfully apply for a GTIN exemption, you must submit live images through edit inventory and they cannot have a UPC code on it. If the associate who is inspecting your images sees a UPC, they will deny the GTIN request.

If you are thinking about using FBA, you can print product labels...otherwise known as FNSKUs and just tape them to your items so the Amazon warehouses can effective handle shipping for you. If you want to be the one that handles shipping, you do not need a UPC code or any FNSKU on your items. You can just ship as is.

the UPC from GS1 is needed for CREATING the listing if you don't ask for a GTIN exemption. Having created the listing with an identifiable UPC protects you to a large percentage from having other sellers on your listing selling a counterfeit. But sticking it on the products it is not necessary.

Didn't AMZ have their own UPC-like identifier that you used to be able to use in lieu of a UPC, which allowed you to ship FBA?

Or have things changed?
