FBA inventory storage limits

To better manage fulfillment center storage space, so that products are received and shipped to buyers more quickly, inventory storage limits can be applied. Storage limits are based on units and are set for each storage type. Your current and potential storage limits and usage are shown when you expand Storage Volume, which you can view in your Inventory performance dashboard and Shipping Queue

Storage limits criteria

Individual selling accounts have a default storage limit and are not subject to storage limit increases.

For Professional selling accounts, storage limits are updated quarterly. Sellers who maintain an Inventory Performance Index (IPI) of the required threshold or above on the week before the next period limits are communicated receive higher storage limits.

New sellers that have been active for less than 13 weeks, or sellers without enough sales data receive default storage limits.

Storage limits are calculated using several factors including:

  • Your sales volume (including your sales' seasonality periods)
  • Your historical IPI scores
  • Available fulfillment center capacity

Sellers with consistently higher IPI scores will receive higher storage limits, adjusted for sales volume and available capacity. When setting limits for an upcoming quarter, Amazon considers both your recent sales volume and seasonal volume from the last year.

Storage types

Storage limits are applicable for two storage types: standard-size and oversize. To understand the storage types under which your products are categorized, go to FBA Inventory Age and the Inventory Age report.

If you do not see a storage type in your Restock Limits, it is because you have a limit of zero for that storage type.

Note: Amazon determines the storage type of your inventory based on the characteristics of the product. Storage type is not a category that sellers can adjust. Products are not classified by more than one storage type.

Exceeding your FBA storage limit

Under the FBA inventory storage limits policy, you will not be able to create a new shipment to Amazon for a storage type until your inventory level drops below your limit for that storage type.

For example, if your current limit for standard-size inventory is 200 units and you have 220 units of standard-size inventory at an Amazon fulfillment center, you cannot create a new standard-size inventory shipment. However, if you are below your storage limit for oversize inventory, you can create shipments of oversize inventory.

If you send more inventory than your storage limit allows, the extra inventory may be refused at the fulfillment center. For more information, see Shipping and routing requirements.

Reducing inventory

There are three ways to decrease the amount of inventory you have in an Amazon fulfillment center:

  • Sell more inventory. FBA Inventory Age provides recommendations to increase sales.
  • Request to have inventory returned to you by creating a removal order.
  • Request to have inventory disposed of by creating a removal order.

You can reduce your inventory levels by removing inventory from fulfilment centres. To learn more, go to Remove inventory (overview).

Go to the Inventory performance dashboard for recommendations on managing your inventory.

Important: When you submit a removal order or make similar changes, the Restock Limits won't reflect the changes until your request has been moved to Pending, which typically happens on the following day. Customer returns contribute to your overall inventory count.

Frequently asked questions

Can I purchase storage space?

At this time, Amazon does not offer the ability to purchase storage space.

Can I change the storage type of a product?

No. Storage types are determined by Amazon based on characteristics of a product.

You can check which storage type your products are on the FBA Inventory age page.

Can I trade space for one storage type with space in another storage type?

No. Inventory cannot be traded between storage types.

What if I do not have an IPI score or am a new FBA seller?

Most sellers with Professional selling accounts have an IPI score, but some do not because we do not have enough data to generate a score for the account (for example, sellers who are new to FBA or have small quantities of FBA inventory). These sellers will get the default storage limits.

I have received my first IPI score. Will my storage limit change?

After you receive your first IPI score, your storage limit does not change immediately. Limits will be updated based on the IPI score in the next adjustment cycle.

You can view the date you received your first IPI score by clicking the Show details link under the IPI score color bar. This will reveal your Historical performance index and your First IPI score date will be visible above the graph.

Most sellers will receive their first IPI score approximately 15 weeks after their first product is received by FBA.

Will my FBA inventory storage limits change?

We continually assess our network capacity to find opportunities to increase storage limits. You can view your most up-to-date storage limits by expanding Restock Limits at the bottom of the Inventory performance dashboard. Storage limits are evaluated on a monthly cycle. Please note that Selling Partner Support does not provide further guidance.

How do I get a storage limit increase for the next period?

Your storage limit is based on how well you drive sales and efficiently manage on-hand inventory as measured by your Inventory Performance Index (IPI) score. The best way to improve your IPI score and increase your storage limit, while minimizing your FBA storage fees is to keep your inventory at lean levels while ensuring you have enough on hand to minimize lost sales from popular items.

Prioritize taking action on stranded inventory, and low-sell through inventory. You should also identify any aged inventory that has been on-hand for longer than 12 months and take immediate action. This will also prevent you from incurring long-term storage fees to help minimize your costs. Your storage limit is based on your historical performance, so actions you take today will take time to fully reflect in your storage limit.

Tracking your storage limits

Professional account holders can track their Inventory Performance Index in the Inventory performance dashboard and learn about IPI on the IPI Help page. The dashboard provides a hub for optimizing your FBA business, including customized recommendations to grow your sales and reduce costs. Your IPI score is updated weekly based on your ongoing inventory management.

The green, yellow, and red indicators also alert you to how close you are to your limit:

Green Your inventory level is at less than 75% of your limit
Yellow Your inventory level is between 75% and 90% of your limit
Red Your inventory level is at more than 90% of your limit
