In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), many everyday products such as washing machines, refrigerators and cooking appliances carry energy efficiency labels and have been designed to meet minimum energy efficiency standards. Energy Efficiency Standards and Labeling or EESL is a set of UAE technical regulations for electrical appliances. This program requires specific information to be included on the product label and aims to provide consumers with information relating to energy efficiency, consumption of energy, and other resources as part of a product label.
The objective of the Energy Labeling Regulation is to enable customers to choose products that are more efficient in order to reduce their energy consumption. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to comply with the Energy Labeling Regulation.
The Energy Labeling Regulation applies to “energy-related products” sold to consumers or used in the UAE with an impact on energy consumption during use.
Examples of energy-related products are:
The Energy Labeling Regulation sets out regulations for suppliers and dealers.
You are a “Supplier” if you are a manufacturer (or authorized representative of a non-UAE manufacturer) established in the UAE, or an importer who imports a product from outside the UAE.
You are a “Dealer” if you are a retailer who offers energy-related products for sale, hire, or hire purchase, or displays energy-related products to customers or installers in the course of a commercial activity.
All energy-related products must display labels in the form of star ratings 5 (most efficient) to 1 (least efficient).
The manufacturer/importer is obliged to ensure that the product manufactured and placed on the market meets Low Voltage Regulation requirements. The manufacturer/importer shall:
When these requirements are met and the product is registered in the electronic registration system, the manufacturer can affix the ECAS Conformity Mark and/or Emirates Quality Mark (EQM), if applicable.
If you are a supplier or a dealer, you must cooperate with market surveillance authorities to remedy non-compliance and take action at your own initiative to do so.
