Fix stranded inventory

Stranded inventory is FBA inventory in fulfillment centers that does not have an associated active offer, and, as a result, is not available for sale on Amazon.

If you have stranded inventory, a Fix Stranded Inventory link appears at the top of the Manage Inventory page. If you do not see this link, you do not have stranded inventory.

Important: Amazon may notify you when you have stranded inventory. If you do not (or cannot) create a listing for your stranded inventory or order its removal within 30 days of this notice, it will be designated unsellable. You are required to remove unsellable units (which are Unsuitable Units, as defined in the Amazon Services Business Solutions Agreement) as described in our Required Removals policy.

You may not be able to send additional units of a product to Amazon when inventory is stranded

If you have stranded inventory, you may not be able to ship additional units of the product that is stranded to an Amazon fulfillment center. If that happens, during shipment creation, you will see a stranded inventory alert if you add a product with stranded inventory to your shipment. See below for ways to resolve stranded inventory issues.

Resolving stranded inventory issues

Important: When you create new or revise existing listings, make sure the ASIN, SKU, and condition are the same as the inventory in your stranded inventory list. A common cause for stranded inventory is creating multiple offers for the same product. If you close an existing offer, any inventory associated with that offer will become stranded, even if you create a new offer for the same product. You may only have one FBA offer per product (this does not apply to products in different conditions—e.g., new, used, refurbished).

  1. Review the list on the Fix Stranded Inventory page. A recommended action for each line item appears in the last column.

    Action More information
Click Change to Fulfilled by Amazon to convert a listing to FBA. List products for Fulfillment by Amazon
Click Create a new listing to create a new offer details page. List your inventory
Click Relist to revise an existing offer. List products for Fulfillment by Amazon

  2. Complete the details based on the options available for that line item.

Alternatively, you can fix all of your stranded inventory at once by using a tab-delimited text (.txt) file. For more information, see Bulk Fix Stranded Inventory.

Frequently asked questions

How does inventory become stranded?

Inventory can become stranded for a number of reasons. If an active offer is closed or set to Fulfilled by Merchant, the corresponding inventory will become stranded. Blocked listings or attempting to sell in restricted categories or brands without approval can also result in stranded inventory. Another common issue is that offers may be missing important information (such as price or item condition), which prevents those offers from becoming active.

I have products that I only sell through Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF), so these products do not have an active offer. Is this allowed?

If you have a professional selling account, you can fulfill orders using Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) (may not be available in your region) without having an active offer. Ensure that your product meets the MCF guidelines by setting your selling start date to the far future and maintaining sales.

For more information, refer to the Multi-Channel Fulfillment help page (may not be available in your region).

I need to send more inventory, even if I already have units of stranded inventory for those products at fulfillment centers. Can I be granted an exemption from this policy?

We currently do not grant exemptions to this policy.
